Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, is his most ambitious and elaborate work for choir and orchestra, and is considered one of the composer's major works. Composed in 1782-3, it embodies all of the pomp and solemnity associated with the Salzburg traditions of the time.
Mozart was strongly influenced by the Baroque giants who preceded him—notably J.S. Bach and Handel. The Mass in C minor soars with unequaled passion and intricacy, anticipating the symphonic masses of Haydn in its solo-choral sharing.
Surprisingly, Mozart left the work incomplete and there is a good deal of speculation as to why. Hear the first Seattle performance of this monumental work, as newly revised and completed by the renowned Mozart scholar, Robert D. Levin.
