Rachmaninov’s Vespers (All-Night Vigil) is a masterpiece of Russian choral sonority,
draped in rich, warm harmonies. First performed in Moscow in 1915, this extended
a cappella work is unquestionably one of Rachmaninov’s finest achievements, a work
of extraordinary beauty and drama that many consider to be the crowning glory of
Russian choral music.
After our 1998 performance of Rachmaninov’s Vespers, the Seattle
P-I wrote, “Seattle Choral Company’s performance reached a clear sweet purity
of tone [and] sounded exquisitely beautiful... It became a moving experience... Again
and again, the different voices would come together on a perfectly pitched chord,
such as can give intense pleasure.”
