About the Music

Howard Goodall
Composed in 2008 by Howard Goodall, Eternal Light: A Requiem is a moving and accessible work that explores themes of loss, remembrance, and hope. While it draws upon the centuries-old tradition of the Requiem Mass, Goodall reshapes the form to emphasize comfort and healing rather than fear and judgment. Alongside traditional Latin texts, he incorporates poetry and writings by John Henry Newman, Mary Elizabeth Frye, Thomas Campion, and Phineas Fletcher, creating a deeply human meditation on mortality and the enduring bonds of love.
Written for soloists, choir, and orchestra, the work combines lyrical melodies, radiant harmonies, and moments of profound emotional intensity. The familiar words of the Requiem are interwoven with English texts that speak directly to the experience of grief and remembrance, making the work accessible to listeners of all backgrounds. Since its premiere, Eternal Light has become one of the most widely performed contemporary choral works, admired for its warmth, sincerity, and uplifting vision of peace, consolation, and eternal rest.

Elaine Hagenberg
Composed in 2015 by Elaine Hagenberg, Illuminare is a powerful contemporary choral work that traces a journey from darkness and uncertainty toward light, hope, and renewal. Drawing on sacred texts, Scripture, and poetry by authors including Charles Anthony Silvestri, the work explores the universal human search for meaning and reassurance in times of struggle. Hagenberg’s expressive musical language—at once lyrical, dramatic, and deeply heartfelt—creates a compelling emotional arc that resonates with performers and audiences alike.
Through soaring melodies, rich choral textures, and moments of intimate reflection, Illuminare invites listeners to consider the many ways light can emerge in the midst of hardship. Its message of resilience, compassion, and hope has made it one of the most beloved large-scale choral works of the twenty-first century, inspiring audiences with its vision of illumination both spiritual and human.
